Jose Enrique hopes Liverpool FC Norwich City draw will not dent Champions League ambitions

JOSE ENRIQUE hopes Liverpool FC’s draw with Norwich City will not come back to haunt their Champions League ambitions.

The Spanish defender insists if he and his team-mates have any ambitions of securing Champions League football for next season then beating sides such as the Canaries at home is imperative.

Enrique applauded the manner in which Norwich engineered Grant Holt’s equaliser – and their second half performance – but knows Liverpool had sufficient chances to have won the game at a canter.

Liverpool’s attacking intent under manager Kenny Dalglish sits well the Enrique – a summer signing from Newcastle United – and says he does not mind if his new club struggle to keep clean sheets, as long as they score one more goal than the opposition.

Dalglish’s side are currently on their worst Premier League run since 2003 for not forcing a shut-out of visiting teams to Anfield but Enrique does not believe the unwanted form is anything to do with the formation employed by the manager.

“We created a lot of chances and deserved the three points but they played better than us in the second half,” said Enrique.

“We respect Norwich and they played well, but against a team like that we have to win if we want to be in the Champions League and we have lost a lot of points like that this season. If we want to be in the Champions League next season we have to win these games.

“The best teams in this league, against teams like that – even though we respect them – at home we have to win. It is harder away, but we have lost two points. I hope in the future we will not look back and need these points.

“We had a lot of chances to score but I don’t know why, what happened, and we didn’t score more goals. We need to be the same in the next few games.

“It is bad luck when you try, try and try but do not score the goals. We started well and then dropped and they scored an amazing goal and sometimes had the ball more than us. We have to be more like we did in the first half.”
