Damien Comolli with John Henry
DAMIEN COMOLLI is hoping Liverpool’s improved scouting network can help them unearthtalented youngsters from the “untapped” Asian market.
The Anfield outfit have been making a concerted effort to strengthen their position in the Far East in recent years, as they look to cast their player recruitment net far and wide.
They recently welcomed Chinese duo Lung Chan, 16, and Chen Nal, 15, to the Kirkby academy, and the pair have impressed in training with Steve Cooper’s U16 side.
Comolli hopes it won’t be long before the club unearths a hidden gem from that part of the world.
”We think it’s an untapped market,” said the Director of Football. “It has such a vast population and there are an incredible number of youngsters playing football in that part of the world.
“Statistically we think there will be good players coming out of these countries. With China being the biggest one and football being the most popular sport amongst young people, we feel it is an opportunity to find a quality player.”
The subject of youth development has been a pertinent one at Anfield since the return of Kenny Dalglish as manager earlier this year. The likes of Jon Flanagan, Jack Robinson, and Conor Coady have all taken significant strides towards the first team in recent months.
