Ian Doyle: Liverpool FC boss Kenny Dalglish says time up for talking now for action before Newcastle clash

KENNY DALGLISH admits Liverpool must start doing their talking on the pitch if they are to prove they deserve to be higher up the Premier League.

Dalglish’s side currently stand in sixth place, three points adrift of Chelsea in fourth and a Champions League qualification berth.

However, their efforts have been hampered by a continued inability to win at Anfield, with the Boxing Day draw against rock-bottom Blackburn Rovers a sixth stalemate in nine home league games this season.

Had Liverpool converted just half of those draws into victories, they would be challenging Tottenham Hotspur for third place.

The main shortcoming has been an inability to convert chances, with Liverpool’s total of 21 goals from 18 league games their worst after the Boxing Day round of fixtures since the outbreak of the First World War.

And with Newcastle United due to visit Anfield tomorrow, Dalglish said: “We want to move on and everybody wants the reward for the fantastic play they have produced.

“We need to improve the goals for column so we'll continue to pursue that goal and I'm sure next year they will be better for the experience they have had this year.

“I think we deserve to be higher up the table than we are but you've got to earn that right and not talk about it – but to be fair they have done a lot of talking on the pitch for us.

“As long as we are in there somewhere, continue to do the right things and give ourselves a chance (come the end of the season) then we'll be happy with that.”

Dalglish added: “Our target is to build on the work that we've already done. As we keep saying there's an awful lot of the work we have done that we've been very pleased with.

“There was a big turnaround of players since the start of the season and that includes Andy (Carroll) and Luis (Suarez) from last year.
