Kenny Dalglish: Liverpool FC will have no chance of success if club becomes too over-reliant on Steven Gerrard

KENNY DALGLISH has warned Liverpool FC will have “no chance” of success if they again become over-reliant on talismanic skipper Steven Gerrard.

The captain ended a two-month spell on the sidelines with a 20-minute appearance from the bench during the home Boxing Day draw against struggling Blackburn Rovers.

The midfielder’s return to fitness following an ankle infection is timely given Luis Suarez is suspended for tonight’s Premier League visit of Newcastle United and is poised to soon miss a further eight games.

With Dalglish erring on the side of caution, Gerrard is likely to remain among the substitutes as Liverpool look to move within a point of the Champions League qualification places.

And the Anfield manager is determined to protect the 31-year-old from assuming the burden of eradicating the team’s current goalscoring woes.

“Steven will help because he’s got goals, he’s got charisma and he’s got presence,” said Dalglish. “He’s got everything but we can’t throw everything on to Steven.

“We can’t say Steven is coming back, he’s going to be the one to do this or that.

“He has only played 20 minutes. If we are going to be a one-man band then we have no chance.
