LIVERPOOL FC have been thrust into another damaging race row after Oldham Athletic player Tom Adeyemi claimed he was racially abused by a supporter on the Kop.
The incident occurred 10 minutes from the end of Liverpool’s 5-1 win in their FA Cup third round tie against the npower League One side at Anfield on Friday night.
A police investigation is under way after Adeyemi, on loan from Norwich City, was involved in an altercation with a fan sat in the Kop end that left the 20-year-old visibly upset.
The game was halted for a few minutes as Adeyemi, seemingly in tears, was comforted by players from both sides including Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard and striker Dirk Kuyt.
Adeyemi has already given a statement to police in which it is understood he claims to have been called a “black c---“.
And an eyewitness who gave evidence to police alleges they saw two fans wearing Luis Suarez t-shirts, and heard one shout “you f---ing black b-----d” which prompted Adeyemi to turn and begin pointing at the crowd.
Liverpool later confirmed they were investigating the incident in conjunction with Merseyside Police.
“An incident occurred in the second half of the match which is now being investigated by both the club and the police,” read a club statement.
“We will continue to work closely with the police to establish the details of what actually happened and will make a further statement in due course.”
However, early reports that three supporters had been arrested in relation to the incident have been dismissed.
A police statement read: “Merseyside Police can confirm that no-one has been arrested this evening (Friday, 6 January) on suspicion of racially aggravated behaviour during tonight's FA Cup fixture at Anfield.
“However, the Force and Liverpool Football Club are investigating following an incident that occurred during the second half of the game. The aim of the investigation is to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident to ascertain if any action needs to be taken.”
