BRENDAN RODGERS has saluted sensational Jose Enrique for the manner in which he has responded to the challenge of salvaging his Liverpool career.
Enrique has been in impressive form after winning his place back in the Anfield first team during the last six weeks, the 26-year-old starting the last seven Premier League games.
Rodgers held a series of conversations earlier this season with the Spaniard, who suffered a severe loss of form after Christmas last season having made an immediate impact on his arrival from Newcastle United in August 2011.
Enrique initially returned in a left midfield role scoring his first Liverpool goal in last months win over Wigan Athletic but was shifted back into an accustomed left-back berth for Saturdays 1-0 triumph against Southampton.
And Rodgers said: That was always the idea.
I felt that he was someone with tremendous ability, but I think its massive credit to him how hes taken on board the chats that weve had and the messages weve given him. Hes listened and taken it on board, and thats to his enormous credit.
I think the spell on the left side has made him feel that he can actually get into the box and be a threat in that way.
When I came here, I wanted my full-backs to do that, to get up there and join in up there. Thats vital.
Jose never really did that at first, to be honest, but now you see hes had that spell on the side, and when you move him back on... I thought he was sensational.
He looks more aggressive, and its fantastic for him. He will be very important in our way of working in the future.
