UNDERSTANDABLY, many Liverpool fans are hoping for significant business in the January transfer window.

But I’m wary.

There is a fixation on bringing players in, but if the deals and the players are not exactly right, then I don’t see any reason to do anything.

Why not hold out until the summer?

I have serious concerns about the reported interest in Daniel Sturridge and Theo Walcott.

Why are Chelsea willing to sell Sturridge to Liverpool? That makes me uneasy. And Walcott is another player I am not sure about.

He gets lots of injuries and always seems to be getting treatment during games. Of course, on his day Theo is a terrific player – but how often does ‘his day’ arrive?

When was the last time he produced a really top international performance for England? If we are being totally honest, the night he scored a hat-trick against Croatia in 2008. He would fit comfortably into a front three at Liverpool but, again, I’m wary that Liverpool supposedly want a player Arsenal could be willing to lose.

So if these players, or any others that Brendan Rodgers may be considering, don’t fit for whatever reason, then Liverpool must keep their powder dry.

January has shown itself an incredibly difficult time to significantly better your squad.

Everton were the obvious exception to this, but most clubs don’t see the true benefit until the following summer.

Some people have said that the Liverpool fans will not accept anything other than permanent deals but I’ve not got a problem with loan signings.

You can end up with some really duff signings in January so if the deal is not right, then I’d be minded to leave it and wait until the summer.

Of course, after the defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday, that might seem like lunacy to some supporters.

Liverpool started really brightly in the first 20 minutes.

The visitors, understandably for such a young side, began nervously but as Liverpool failed to convert their chances, Villa grew in confidence. All of a sudden Christian Benteke started knocking people about and causing all sorts of problems.

Villa also scored their goals at exactly the right time and from the 20th minute to the last, Liverpool were poor and a shadow of the side that had gone unbeaten in three matches. They lacked discipline, looked really ragged and ran out of ideas. They just had a bad day.

They have got to start again and win their next game, which is at home to Fulham on Saturday teatime. I believe the majority of Liverpool fans are understanding of where the club is at.

Getting back into the top four is going to take a while and most Liverpool fans will wait until the end of the season before making a judgement on Rodgers’ first campaign in charge at Anfield.
