Liverpool FC’s last five FA Cup third round matches

January 2012 Liverpool 5 Oldham Athletic 1

Kenny Dalglish’s side began on the road to Wembley with a win more hard-earned than the scoreline suggests. Robbie Simpson put Oldham ahead but Craig Bellamy and Steven Gerrard netted before the break with Jonjo Shelvey, Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing completing the scoring.

January 2011 Manchester United 1 Liverpool 0

The sacking of Roy Hodgson 24 hours earlier led to the return of Kenny Dalglish to the touchline. But an early penalty from Ryan Giggs and the first-half dismissal of Gerrard meant the King’s comeback was always going to end in defeat.

January 2010 Reading 1 Liverpool 1, Liverpool 1 Reading 2

The beginning of the end for Rafael Benitez. After Gerrard equalised Simon Church’s opener to force a rematch at Anfield, Ryan Bertrand’s own goal appeared to have put Liverpool through until Gylfi Sigurdsson’s late penalty allowed Shane Long to net the winner in extra time.

January 2009 Preston 0 Liverpool 2

A rare routine third-round win for Liverpool under Benitez against Alan Irvine’s Lilywhites, who included former Anfield striker Neil Mellor. Albert Riera gave the visitors a first-half lead before Fernando Torres sealed victory in the final minute.

January 2008Luton 1 Liverpool 1, Liverpool 5 Luton 0

John Arne Riise’s own goal, three minutes after Peter Crouch’s 73rd-minute opener, earned Luton a deserved replay. But Benitez’s side ran riot in the replay, Gerrard pleading with the manager to let him stay on to score a hat-trick as Ryan Babel and Sami Hyypia also netted.
