Mark Lawrenson: Why Liverpool FC need to persuade Jamie Carragher to carry on playing

Jamie Carragher

And in the meantime, I’d encourage him to start taking his coaching badges.

If Carragher is pitched into the right job, then I’m sure he will stay. After all, he has nothing to prove by going elsewhere. His reputation would most likely only go down as a result.

Even if Carragher plays on, with Sebastian Coates appearing on the way out it would leave Liverpool needing at least one new centre-back.

I can’t think of anybody who’d be suitable in England, so they would have to look further afield. Indeed, there is a genuine paucity of good defenders in any position playing in the Premier League.

Liverpool’s thumping of Norwich City last weekend was a further sign their Anfield hoodoo has now been banished.

People might look at the standard of team they’ve faced recently, but they failed to beat Fulham, Sunderland or Norwich at home last season.

Things are coming together. Daniel Sturridge has made a bright start, the return of Lucas Leiva has released Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez remains in the mood.

Jose Enrique, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson have all risen to the challenge and become integral players in recent months, and that’s a feather in the cap for Rodgers for encouraging them to prove they deserve to be at the club. They are doing so.

That said, if someone offered £10million for Downing tomorrow, I would accept. As well as he has done lately, you have to compare the last six weeks with the previous 18 months. On that basis, you’d say thanks and take the money.
