First win proves hard-earned

BURSCOUGH manager Liam Watson was pleased with his side’s first win of the season in the Blue Square Conference North – but claimed his side “made hard work of it.”

He was right, although perhaps Worcester made them work hard because they competed for every yard so the good football Burscough managed to play was a bonus.

The visitors almost netted in the first few seconds, though by the time Neil Robinson hit the Linnets’ opener in the 14th minute, Burscough were in control.

The goal was set up by a sublime through ball from Chris Price, leaving Robinson time to beat Worcester keeper Danny McDonnell.

The Burscough second arrived just a minute later. Dave Roberts ran unmarked onto a Matt McGinn free-kick and thumped a header home.

Worcester dragged themselves back into the game in the 24th minute, Emeka Nwadike netting with a diving header from a George Clegg corner.

Both teams had chances after the break, although it was Burscough who finished the stronger team, the final whistle being blown fractionally too early for Adam Carden, who hit a superb shot into the top corner, only to hear the whistle as the ball left his foot.
