Lairds set style with new boys

CAMMELL LAIRD laid down a marker for their centenary season with a solid victory over a plucky Stocksbridge Park Steels side in the UniBond League Division One South.

Despite losing goal machines Ronnie Morgan and Jamie McGuire in the close season, Lairds demonstrated their eye for quality with all three goals coming from newcomers to the Kirklands fold.

After a slow start, Lairds took the lead against the Sheffield outfit when Graham Jones slipped his marker and coolly slotted the ball home.

Steels refused to drop their heads and tried hard to get back in the game and their mettle was tested when ex-Warrington Town striker Gary Jenson fired home from a tight angle just before the break to double the home side’s lead.

The second half was entertaining from both teams and in the 75th minute Steels pulled one back through Ben Walker.

A tight finish was expected as the game swung from end to end but Alex Hay struck an unstoppable shot to secure the three points.
