Amateur Football: Heswall claw back draw as the champions falter

WEST KIRBY, last season’s Carlsberg West Cheshire League First Division champions, got off to a flying start with a midweek 2-1 win at Castrol Social with goals from Peter Hamlen and Liam Atherton.

They then entertained Heswall on Saturday and continued where they had left off as Paul Casey put them ahead in sensational fashion after 18 minutes, curling in his corner kick.

Three minutes after the break Danny Brookes made it two after shooting through a crowded penalty area.

But Heswall’s new signing Mike Pickles poached a goal and they equalised in style on 88 minutes when Darren McGuinness broke loose and beat the advancing keeper.

Cammell Laird Reserves are making the early running, with a comprehensive victory at Ellesmere Port with two goals from Mike Bishop and one each from Jimmy Holmes and Chris Nazianya.

Also unbeaten are newly promoted Runcorn Town, who accounted for a much improved Marine reserve side. Ryan Wade and Connor Taylor netted for Town, Peter McShane getting a consolation for the visitors.

Vauxhall Motors reserves’ young side are finding life difficult, going down to Heswall, who had Danny McGuinness (2) and Chris Ballard on target in midweek.

They fared little better at the weekend when visitors Ashville gained their first points after Paul Harding and Simon Donaghue cancelled out Motors’ Liam Walker’s strike.
