CHESTER CITY’S reserve side turned in an impressive performance to defeat a strong Preston North End team in a Pontins League fixture at the Deva Stadium yesterday.
The visitors, who included Brett Ormerod and Sean St Ledger in their line-up, played their part in an excellent game, but overall City deserved their second victory of the campaign.
Chester’s goals came in the first half from Paul Rutherford and Nathan Lowndes, who registered in the second period. Home keeper Phil Palethorpe turned in an excellent performance to thwart the Lancastrians, particularly in the second half.
Former Stockport County midfield player Tony Dinning, made his first appearance for City.
With regular central defender Paul Linwood suspended for next Saturday’s first team game, at Bury, following his dismissal against Morecambe last weekend, manager Bobby Williamson played Phil Bolland and youngster Kevin Roberts in the heart of the Chester defence yesterday with both players performing creditably.
Meanwhile, the date of City’s second round Johnstone’s Paint Trophy match against Carlisle United has been confirmed as Tuesday, October 9 at Brunton Park (kick-off 7.45pm).
Former Chesterfield and Macclesfield striker Colin Heath, who had an extended trial with Chester last month, has joined Blue Square National club Farsley Celtic.
