Liverpool struggle to match power

LIVERPOOL couldn’t overcome the power of the current league champions Arsenal yesterday as the Gunners ran out 4-1 winners.

David Bradley’s Reds, recently promoted to the top flight, knew it was always going to be a tough ask to beat a team which hasn’t lost a league fixture in over 12 months.

Welsh international Jayne Ludlow opened the scoring for the away side and added two more in the second before World Cup star Karen Carney added a fourth.

Kelly Jones scored with a header in the second half, and there are positives the Liverpool manager can take into Thursday’s derby with Everton.

Meanwhile, the Blues made their domestic return to football with a 6-0 thrashing of Barnet in the Premier League Cup.

With six of the Everton squad taking part in the World Cup in China, all their fixtures had been postponed.

And they came back in style and got the first after 11 minutes as Kelly McDougall’s volley was palmed into the net. Emily Westwood got the second before McDougall got another with a looping header.

It took just 10 minutes of the second half for McDougall to secure her hat-trick.

Westwood then got her second and full-back Rachel Unitt completed the scoring.

But Tranmere’s season took another blow as they were knocked out of the cup 4-2 by Colchester United.

Kate Hooley and Annabel Price were on target for Tranmere.

But three Colchester goals in a 12-minute spell meant Rovers were knocked out.
