Non-League: Blyth Spartans 0, Vauxhall Motors 2

VAUXHALL’S amazing record in the north east was maintained at Blyth as the Motormen ran out comfortable winners in the area for the second successive weekend.

It was their first away success of the Blue Square North season, following last week’s FA Cup success at Gateshead.

The visitors began brightly and new signing Heler was a prominent figure in the opening exchanges. Motors ought to have taken the lead on 22 minutes when first Field and then Wright were denied by Spartans keeper Bartlett in quick succession.

But they finally grabbed the initiative on 36 minutes when Marsh-Evans produced a good run down the left before feeding Wright in the inside left channel for the striker to swivel and chip a beauty from eight yards for his first goal of the season.

Blyth never seriously tested the Motors keeper throughout the contest with Dale and Snowden both off target with late first-half efforts.

Spartans upped their tempo after the interval but could not penetrate the visitors’ defence, in which central defenders Kelly and Hotte were outstanding.

The outcome was effectively sealed on 83 minutes when Taylor, in acres of space, played in Field, who finished with a fine shot from the edge of the area. Indeed, it might have been worse for the hosts when Wright curled a shot just over.
