Non-League: Southport 5, Hucknall Town 0

A SUPER Southport show saw the Sandgrounders hammer five past beleaguered basement side Hucknall as the continued their promotion drive in Blue Square North.

Delighted manager Peter Davenport only had one criticism as his squad look to bounce back into the Blue Square Premier at the first time of asking.

“We had the chances to have made it at least 10,” he declared after watching his side sweep away the opposition.

“We have been threatening a performance like this. We have an excellent set of players and this will give the young lads real confidence.”

Tony Gray initiated the rout with a 12th-minute opener, finishing with a low shot after hesitant Hucknall defending.

Jinking winger Jerome Watt induced a 23rd-minute free kick from the opposition defenders out on the left wing, with Chris Lever steering home the resulting kick from close range.

Both Gray and strike partner Liam Blakeman struck the woodwork just before half-time.

The points were decided just after the interval when Mark Duffy’s powerful free-kick rattled the crossbar and, in almost comical fashion, defender Daniel Fletcher netted an own goal.

The stage was set for two majestic Blakeman long-range strikes to round off Southport’s sixth win in seven matches.

The victory extended the Sandgrounders’ unbeaten home record and they remain third in the table, three points behind leaders Harrogate Town.
