Dock into next round as Hesketh humbled

IN THE ‘new’ North West Counties Cup, the League had a fair smattering of success against opposition from Lancashire.

Champions Waterloo Dock moved into round two with a comfortable 2-0 away win at Fleetwood Hesketh, Lee Battle and Tony Denson (now with 10 goals this season) with the goals for the Dock.

Also through are South Sefton Boro as they edged past Garstang 2-1, with goals from Craig Lemarge and Neil Parker.

St Aloysius made extremely hard work of Haslington St Mary’s but eventually got through 2-1.

St Dominics were the biggest scorers of the day after putting seven past Coppull United against only one in their own net, as James Croxton, Carl McGarry, both with doubles were aided by Neil Martin and Steve Jennings.

Speke took extra-time to beat Euxton Villa 4-2.

On the downside, losses for Collegiate OB against Blackpool Wren Rovers 3-1, BRNESC were beaten 2-0 at home to Turton.

Red Rum were losing beat 2-0 when the Eagley keeper got into an altercation with visiting fans and the referee had to abandon the game. Lucas Sports put up a brave show but were beaten with the last kick of the match 2-1 by Fulwood Amateurs.

In the County FA Challenge Cup, Roma were beaten 4-2 after extra-time by Marine Reserves, Dave Cooney with both Roma goals.

In the Premier Division, only the one gam and South Liverpool strengthened their fourth place with a 3-1 home win over NELTC, James Kelly and Steve Coyne both scoring plus a goal for Kevin Martin. NELTC scored through Andy Williams.

In Division One, Page Celtic were surprisingly beaten 4-2 by Edge Hill, who despite being down to nine men held out to win comfortably.

In the other game, North Sefton registered their first win of the season after a 4-2 win over Warbreck.

In the County FA Junior Cups, mixed news for the League’s team. Angus Village beat Rainford North End 2-0 to progress, Paul Collier and David Webster for Angus.

Leyfield were beaten 2-1 away at Birchfield Reserves, Essemmay OB had a walkover after Blue Lion failed to show and Blueline beat Focus after penalties with the score at 3-3 after 120 minutes; Blueline held their nerve to win 4-3 on penalties.In the Lancashire Shield second round, Old Xaverians beat BAE/Springfields 2-1 to progress to round three, Paddy O’Hanlon and Carl Gargan the scorers.
