Liverpool through to second round of cup

LIVERPOOL LADIES are through to the second round of the Premier League Cup, after a memorable 2-0 win over Leeds United on Sunday.

Liverpool had been showing some signs of form recently, despite two defeats to Arsenal and Everton. But they managed to cause an upset over an established National Division side, and the team who were runners up in the competition last year.

Cheryl Foster gave David Bradley’s side the lead, as she stepped in from the wing and shot home. The lead was the doubled, Kelly Jones seeing her header loopand into the net.

“We didn’t give Leeds any chances today,” said Liverpool manager Bradley. “Now that we’re through, you never know where we can get to. So we’re well pleased with the result.

“I’ve always said that we’re not far off the top sides, and now we’ve beaten Leeds. There is defiantly belief in the squad at the moment. In the last four games, we’ve played four of the top teams in the league and we’ve beaten two of them.”

Meanwhile in the National Division, Everton didn’t take their chances as they could only draw 1-1 with Birmingham.

Mo Marley’s side travelled to the Midlands on the back of victories over Barnet and Liverpool, but just couldn’t make it three.

Danni Bird gave the home side the lead early in the second half, against the run of play. It looked to be one of those days for Everton, as they could not find an equaliser with time rapidly running out.

That was until Fara Williams found the net.

“I’m very disappointed,” said manager Mo Marley.

Tranmere also managed to claim a league victory, as they beat Aston Villa 1-0 at Poulton Victoria, thanks to Debbie Cartmel’s goal.
