Holden strike takes Crossfields top Cheshire League

CROSFIELDS used their game in hand to go top of the Cheshire Building Society Cheshire League First Division with a 2-1 win at Woodley Sports.

The Warrington side went behind early on, but equalised with a well-taken goal by Stuart Wellstead then Neil Holden snatched then winner after player-manager Andy Moore had brought himself on to liven things up.

Witton Albion Reserves continued their improved form to thrash Trafford Reserves 7-3 at Wincham Park, Rob McGee leading the way with a well-taken hat-trick.

Stalybridge Celtic Reserves beat fading Knutsford 3-1 at Bnwer Fold while Barnton drew 1-1 at Linotype/Cheadle Heath with a goal from Matt Davies.

FC United of Manchester Reserves stretched their lead in Division Two to six points with a 2-1 home win against Golborne Sports, but the best win of the day was recorded by Lostock Gralam, their 3-2 result against Grappenhall Sports at Park Stadium being their first of the season.

Leaders in the Golden Boots top goal-scorers league are: Lee Boardman (Crosfields) 10 goals (First Division); Mike Dawson (FC United of Manchester reserves) nine goals (Second Division).

The league had three winners in the second round of the Cheshire FA Amateur Cup led by reigning Division One champions Middlewich Town, who triumphed 4-0 against Christleton at Little Heath with a brace of goals from Mike Brandon. Also through are Broadheath Central, who beat Mallaby 2-1, and Club AZ, who knocked out league rivals Malpas.

The annual Cooper Smith representative match against the West-Cheshire League is under floodlights at Trafford on Wednesday, November 7 (7.30pm). The Mid-Cheshire League as they were then know, won 6-0 last season.
