CAMMELL LAIRD experienced a shock victory against the champions of non-League football this week.
However, it was not a victory on the pitch that gave them the win over Goole FC – but in the kitchen as they were crowned steak pie kIngs.
Goole, famous in non-league circles for producing the Rolls-Royce of pies, were challenged to the showdown by Radio Merseyside presenter Alan Jackson, in his midweek non-League football show.
Laird’s spokesman, Paul McLoughlin, said: “During the preview to the Goole match, Alan asked me to bring a pie back for him. As an ex-player with Cables he is well versed in the importance of pies in the non-league world.
“The officials at Goole were only too glad to supply the pie which was put head to head in a blind tasting against the a Laird’s offering in a mid-season pie-off.”
Sensationally Jackson chose the offering of the Birkenhead club as his favourite but after a hasty post-pie deliberation the result was declared as an honourable draw.
The reason for the over-ruling was that Jackson believed that the Humberside delicacy was too tasty to be a commercially-made pie and that McLoughlin’s wife had made it!
