MANAGER Peter Davenport believes Southport’s 3-2 FA Trophy victory at Barrow showed how far his side have come this season.
Port were beaten 1-0 in Blue Square North at Holker Street in August but they avenged that defeat last Saturday to set up a first round trip to Alfreton Town in a fortnight.
They found themselves trailing 2-1 early in the second half but hit back courtesy of Liam Blakeman’s second of the day and Kevin Lee’s winner.
“It was a really big win for us last weekend,” Davenport said. “We lost at Barrow at the start of the season but I think last Saturday showed we are mentally stronger as a squad now.
“This team has grown up a lot since August. It’s still a young squad with the lads still gelling but they are growing up together.
“Everything they have learned so far this season will stand them in good stead for the challenges ahead.”
Port have already won at Alfreton this season but Davenport is wary.
“I was glad to avoid the Conference Premier teams but it would have been nice to have got a home tie,” he said.
Port return to league action at mid-table Boston today aiming to secure a seventh straight win in all competitions.
They are just two points behind leaders Harrogate Town and Davenport has a full squad to select from.
