MARINE made the long journey home from the International Stadium content in the knowledge that another outstanding display in this UnibBond Premier League game could well be the defining moment of the season.
The Mariners made a dream start and took the lead in the third minute. Paul Woolcott flicked the ball up, drifted past a couple of defenders and struck the ball past Peter Keen.
For the remainder of the half Marine gave a determined rearguard performance backed up by Andy Banks, who made a couple of outstanding saves. Right on half-time Marine could have extended their lead but Karl O’Donnell saw his shot cleared off the line.
Gateshead drew level on 49 minutes when an innocuous looking cross from Craig Baxter deceived everybody and sailed into the net.
Despite the pressure it was Marine who would take all three points. On 79 minutes Woolcott went on a run from the halfway line. He passed to O’Donnell, who stuck an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box.
MARINE: Banks, Brazier, Farley, Connolly, McDermott, Brookfield, Hussey, Parle, Cumiskey, O’Donnell, Woolcott. Subs: Young, Potter, Latham.
