Marshall strike sinks Marine

DESPITE playing for 75 minutes without goalkeeper Chris Sanna, Stamford were worthy victors in this UniBond Premier League clash.

Marine were without Karl O’Donnell and Adam Farley, who succumbed to the flu bug, but still made the better start.

Peter Cumiskey’s cross just eluded Ian Latham early on before, on 15 minutes, Sanna was taken off after a clash with Kevin Towey.

Martin Wormall replaced him in goal and the Mariners took the lead on 21 minutes when Lee Parle dispossessed Steve Marshall and shot past Wormall.

But six minutes later Stamford were level.

A corner eluded everyone except Tony Battersby, who finished neatly at the back post.

Stamford won the game on 65 minutes when Lee Marshall found himself unmarked in Marine’s box and shot past Andy Banks.

Despite introducing Shaun Tuck and Paul Woolcott into the fray Marine were unable to trouble Wormall and it was Banks who kept the score down with a fabulous last-minute save.

MARINE: Banks, Potter, Connolly, Brazier, McDermott, Brookfield, Parle, Hussey, Latham, Cumiskey, Towey. Subs: Rice, Woolcott, Tuck.

STAMFORD: Sanna, White, Culkin, Jones, Julian, Marshall, Wormall, Jones, Metton, Battersby, French. Subs: Hughes, Kirk, Gowater.
