Glut of goals sees Merseysiders safely through

IT WAS a good weekend for local sides in the Women’s FA Cup as both Everton and Liverpool advanced comfortably to the fifth round.

Mo Marley’s Everton side ran out 9-0 victors over Southern Division side Barnet while David Bradley’s Liverpool team overcame South West Combination side Forrest Green Rovers 6-0 at Skelmersdale United.

It’s the second time Everton have beaten Barnet, the last time being the 6-0 victory over the Bees in the Premier League Cup back in September.

This time they had reached that scoreline by half time!

Michelle Evans grabbed the first before defender Fern Whelan made it two just 12 minutes in. Jill Scott scored the third with winger Evans then making it 4-0 just before the half hour.

Amy Kane was also on the scoresheet and Jody Hanley scored her first of the game in stoppage time before the break.

Youngster Michelle Hinnigan scored her first goal for the club deep into the second half before a goal from defender Rachel Unitt made it 8-0 with nine minutes to go.

Hanley completed the rout with her second of the game and her 11th of the season.

“It was a very good performance,” said Everton manager Marley.

“We demanded more from them after our last game against Watford before Christmas. To be honest we won the game in the first half an hour.

“We were good individually and good as a team. They were no mugs, but our first touch passing created a lot of chances for us.

“We did score a lot from set-plays, but we do need to be better from free play. But we’re building on that and today was progress.”

Mo concluded: “I was more than pleased with our performance, from front to back. “

The Liverpool match against Forest Green was the typical David v Goliath encounter, but Liverpool had no trouble in dispatching their lower league opponents.

Defenders Jo Traynor and Gayle Formston found themselves on the scoresheet, as was midfielder Jill Hart.

Ali Hastie and Kelly Jones also found the back of the net, with substitute Cheryl Foster completing the scoring .

The draw for the fifth round pairings takes place at lunchtime today.
