IN a Cheshire Building Society Cheshire League programme decimated by bad weather, Golborne Sports reached the final of the Second Division Cup with an impressive 4-2 win at Tarporley Vics.
The Warrington-based club’s leading marksman Mike Dawson scored two fine goals to clinch a late victory against new boys Tarporley, for whom Al Moore also scored a brace. The second semi-final between Broadheath Central and Club AZ was washed out and is being re-arranged.
In Division Two, Whitchurch Alport beat Billinge 2-1 in a mid-table clash. All other games were postponed.
Only one game in the First Division survived, Linotype/Cheadle Heath Nomads improving their mid-table placing with a 3-2 win at struggling Rylands.
Two well-taken goals by Dean McGregor swung it for Linotype to leave Rylands languishing in next to bottom place with only six points from 15 games and looking certain to be relegated alongside current bottom club Poynton.
Waterlogged grounds hampered progress in the First Division’s Jack Parker Challenge Cup with the first two quarter-finals – Curzon v Trafford and Poynton v Middlewich – both called off.
It is expected the games will be re-arranged for Saturday, February 9, the date allocated for other two quarter-finals, Stalybridge Celtic v Gamesley and Woodley Sports v Crosfields.
Pending league approval, there are plans for Woodley Sports to be taken over by Northwich Victoria next season and operate as the Blue Square Premier club’s reserve team.
Woodley chairman Jim Rushe is a member of the consortium which recently bought out Northwich and several players, including Adam Morning, Luke Horrocks and Danny Williams have already played for Vics.
