SOUTHPORT manager Peter Davenport has defended his decision to put midfielder Liam Blakeman on the transfer list.
The 25-year-old has been virtually an ever-present for Port this season, but has attracted interest from rival clubs.
Davenport said: “Liam hasn’t been himself in training or games over the past 10 days and I think someone has got into his head and turned it a little bit. We need to nip it in the bud and we decided the best option was for him to go on the list.
“We’re open to offers and we’ve had a couple of enquiries.
“Going on the list is maybe the kick up the backside he needs. If he knuckles down and gives 100% then everyone will be happy.”
While Blakeman’s future is uncertain, Davenport has boosted his midfield options this week with the signing of Neil Sorvel on a month’s loan from Morecambe.
The 34-year-old boasts a wealth of experience, having played for Macclesfield, Crewe and Shrewsbury.
Sorvel looks set to be handed his debut in today’s Blue Square North clash at home to Worcester City.
Port’s 2-1 win at Hucknall last weekend reduced Kettering’s lead at the top to just five points. However, they came back down to earth in midweek when they lost 2-1 to Marine in the Liverpool Senior Cup. Davenport fielded a weakened team but was still disappointed with his side’s efforts.
He said: “I gave a number of fringe players a chance but they didn’t quite come up to the mark.
“People come knocking on my door asking why they are not in the team but the performance against Marine answered it.”
