Rovers enjoy cup tonic ahead of key clash

WITH both Liverpool and Everton having a free weekend, Tranmere had the Cheshire Cup on their minds as they played Crewe for a place in the semi-finals.

And it was a positive result for struggling Rovers, as they managed to progress courtesy of a Rachel Rigby goal just before half time.

With Shirley Waring's side stuck in the Northern Division drop zone, the side could be forgiven for having other priorities, but the Rovers manager says wining was the most important thing.

“Hopefully that will give us a boost going into next week’s game,” said Waring. “We needed a good victory to get us on a roll again. We play Rotherham next week, who are down at the bottom of the league with us, so this will give us a bit of confidence.”

Staying in the Northern Division is the most important thing for Rovers, so did the manager feel tempted to dismiss this fixture in favour of next week’s six-pointer?

“I did rest Sue Kenwright as she had a slight injury,” continued Waring. “But the girls did put everything in today. They want to try and win this trophy.”
