Games frozen out but Woodchurch are on fire

IN the Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Football League, although the sunshine was out, most pitches were frozen over and were deemed to be too hard and unsafe to play on. The remainder got underway a little late, but managed to get results.

The Woodchurch AFC benefited with goals from Daniel Watterson and Jamie Evans to take all three points from a deflated FC Beehive, in the Premier Division. Beehive fought hard to get the ball into the 18-yard box, but just couldn’t finish.

In Division Three, both Bebington Legion and Shillings Bar, who are only a point apart in the table, worked hard to come out the victors and take all three points, but went home with a 2-2 draw. Goals from Hardman and Ballard for Bebington, Smith and Humphrey for Shillings. JB Leasing kept their hold on the top spot with two goals from Mike Shaw and another from Liam Cairns cancelling out the Barry Huxley goal for the George FC. Shaftesbury ‘B’ enjoyed a 4-0 win over third-placed Shillings Bar, with goals from L McNally (2), B Kilban and A Birchall.

In the Youth Division, Mike McGrath was on fire and gained admiration from his Ashville manager and the Shaftesbury team with eight goals to his name. Andy Smith and Jay Little also added to the tally to finish the match 10-3. David MacIlroy scored a hat-trick for Shaftesbury in return.

In the cup ties, New Brighton Youth went out of the Wirral Sunday Youth Cup to Ellesmere Port after goals from Tom Craig – in the first minute, and Steven Sass placed them in the final to be played on March 30 (provisional date).
