Warrington undeservedly lose out to last-minute goal

WARRINGTON travelled to Derbyshire in the UniBond League First Division looking to avenge two earlier defeats to their hosts Belper Town.

On the stroke of half-time, Hannah forced Town keeper Shane McWeeney into an excellent flying save at his near post.

Warrington began the second half brighter and within seven minutes, took the lead when Kevin Towey picked the ball up on the edge of the box, after a scramble and scored through the legs of goalkeeper Paul Pettinger. On 76 minutes, Hannah put an excellent chance to equalise wide, but the home side continued to attack and got a fortuitous equaliser in the 81st minute when a Spearitt clearance hit colleague Steve Everett and rebounded into the net. Towey came close to re-establishing Town’s lead when he forced Pettinger into an excellent block. Belper scored their undeserved winner in the 90th minute when Ross Hannah’s 25-yard effort went under the body of McWeeney and into the net.

WARRINGTON: McWeeney, Everett, Fitzsimmons, Spearitt, Thomas, Heath, Towey, Smith (Daniels 66), Rendell (Owens 77), Lamb (Lynch 31), Williams.
