THE George Mahon Cup quarter- finals and once again it provided their fair share of shocks., starting with holders
Holders East Villa were taken all the way by South Liverpool through extra time and penalties, which South eventually won 3-2 after the scores had been level at 3-3 after 120 minutes.
Lee Poland, Colin Deacon and an own goal for South whilst for East Villa, Peter Gannon ( his 12th of the season), Tony Lipson and Ian Cook scored, but its South who progress to the semis, to meet Aigburth PH.Aigburth also caused a shock with a 2-0 win at Premier side Old Xaverians, Reggie Standish and Tony Caldwell scoring for APH and another Premier League scalp to add to the growing list for APH this season.
Birchfield ended Collegiate’s good run in the cup by winning 3-1. Chris Hart and a double from Ian Ashcroft were enough to put Birchfield through to play Ford Motors.
Ford Motors beat second Division side Sacre Coeur 2-0, Sacre Coeur who knocked NELTC out at the last round could not complete the feat again after goals from Ben Hughes and Mark Ellis were enough to set up a semi final on April 19th.
In the much-reduced Premier League card, its Waterloo Dock opened up a 12-point lead over second-placed East Villa after a 3-0 home win over County Challenge Cup finalists Speke., James Morgan bagged a pair and Anthony Battle also scored as Waterloo set an amazing lead for East Villa to overcome, despite having 4 games in hand., what you want points or games?
Red Rum moved into third spot courtesy of a 3-1 home win over struggling BRNESC, Jimmy Wiencke with his 20th and top scorer for goals of the campaign and 6 in the last 3 weeks! Steve Flynn and Liam Cannon with the other goals for the Rum, replied to by Steve Higgins for BRNESC.
Lucas Sports beat bottom club Roma 2-1, Francis Evans and David Molyneux with all important strikes for Lucas, whilst Dave O’Rourke breathed hope into Roma it was not to be, its looking really grim for Roma. Stuart Daly also thought Roma had a good goal denied by Assistant Corlett.
Not so grim for South Sefton, who needed and got a good away win at St Dominics, 2-0 Adam Millington with both goals that will almost certainly guarantee Premier Football for Sefton next season.
In Division One, we have new leaders and it was coming for weeks wasn’t it?, as Page Celtic are now the proud leaders after a 4-1 home win over Albany Athletic, Tony Sullivan with a pair to take his tally to 9 , Arron Branwell for the second week running and Joe Feeney with 15 goals all netting whilst Mick Gough scored for Albany.
Pervious leaders Alder FC were humiliated at home by Cheshire Lines 5-0 and move to second place and are under threat from APH and now REMYCA, who steamrollered Kingsley 5-2, Williams with a pair and assists from Bond, Walsh and Riley, Caddick also with a double for Kingsley.
Shocks included North Sefton beating Warbreck 4-3 in a high- scoring derby match, a result that moves North Sefton away from the relegation zone and to relative safety. Chris Sutcliffe with a double and Paul Finnan’s 14th of the campaign the main reason Sefton won, despite goals from Thomas King and John Flood for Warbreck.
Angus Village seem to have lost their way again, losing harshly 3-2 to Stoneycroft for whom Shaun Butterworth grabbed his 19th and 20th goals of the season.
Dave Gamble must have though his double for Village would secure a point but it wasn’t his day.
Edge Hill and Northern Telecoms played out a 2-2 draw, which all but finishes off Edge Hill’s hopes of promotion. Chris Carmichael, was on target for them.
Mackets Grenadier beat Copperas Hill 2-1 to leave the posties with a lot to do to stay in League One next season. Mark Goulding and Graham Walsh scored for Mackets, Dave Shannon for Copperas.
