Impressed Moore waits to decide on Davies comeback

STEVE DAVIES lasted the full 90 minutes in his comeback game for Tranmere Reserves against Carlisle United Reserves in last night’s Pontins Holidays League Division One West clash at Prenton Park.

Davies, sidelined for six months after suffering cruciate ligament damage, did not totally commit himself but it was a useful work-out and he gradually became more and more involved.

He tested United keeper Chris Howarth with a well struck free-kick in the 67th minute, and put another effort wide.

But Davies collected a yellow card late on after he and Carlisle defender Darren Campion squared up to each other, after Campion had conceded a free-kick.

“It was hard work, but I am just pleased to be back in action, and to have got through the full 90 minutes,” said Davies.

Manager Ronnie Moore commented: “I thought he did really well.

“He got through it and I was impressed with his commitment.

“It is nice to have him back, but I will wait to see whether I include him in the squad for Saturday’s crucial match against Nottingham Forest.”

Controversial point in last night’s game was the dismissal of Craig Curran, 12 minutes into the second half for his second yellow card. It followed a 50-50 challenge on the Carlisle keeper but it appeared a very poor decision by referee Merchant.

Curran had collected a first-half caution for dissent.

John Achterberg made some good first-half saves for Tranmere. The home side did better in the second period but came unstuck in the 86th minute when Carlisle striker Danny Carlton headed in the only goal from a Kevin Gaull corner.

The result was tough on Rovers, but was important for the visitors, who are looking for a play off place in the Division.
