EVERTON Ladies proved once again they can be a match for Arsenal as they drew 0-0 at Borehamwood.
The result ends the Gunners’ streak of 51 league wins and follows Everton’s 1-0 League Cup final win over the same opposition in February.
Although the result is a positive one for Mo Marley’s team, it leaves Arsenal on course for the league title as Everton needed to win to keep their hopes alive. The Toffees matched their hosts and had their own opportunities to win.
Manager Marley was left with mixed feelings.
“We’d normally be quite pleased with a point away from home at Arsenal,” she said. “But because we really needed to win, it doesn’t feel like we’ve really benefited from it.”
Marley added: “Not many teams get anything from Arsenal. We lost to them in the league at home, from two set-plays, so they didn’t break us down in open play. We won the cup final and kept a clean sheet, so to get two clean sheets against Arsenal is something to build on.”
The manager believes her players are capable of one day being the best in the country.
“I think we can beat anybody,” Marley continued. “What we must do as a club is be consistent. Putting these performances in week-in, week-out against the teams below us. I know we’re going to be up for an Arsenal game. But sometimes we’ve been inconsistent against lesser teams.
“I think if we can get that balance right, then there’s a possibility we can be league champions.”
Everton’s next match is away to Blackburn Rovers on Thursday.
In the Northern Division, Tranmere lost their final game of the season 3-1 to Preston North End.
Sue Kenwright scored the consolation goal for Shirley Waring's side.
Liverpool beat Tranmere Rovers reserves 5-0 in the semi-final of the Liverpool Senior Cup at Skelmersdale. They will now meet either Everton or Liverpool Feds.
Liverpool travel to Leeds on Thursday.
