Brigg Town 0, Warrington Town 2

TOWN travelled to Lincolnshire in confident mood in the UniBond First Division, after defeating fellow Lincolnshire outfit Grantham at home last week, this time – and with good reason.

Both sides started slowly, with very few chances being created in the first twenty minutes, however, the game really got into gear soon after, when Diego Bassanini was called into action to deny Brigg top scorer Rick Day, and within a minute, They were ahead after Tom Lamb saw his shot deflected for a corner, from which unmarked striker Carl Rendell met Michael Owens’s kick to steer the ball beyond Damien Steer in the Brigg goal. Bassanini was back in action again shortly afterwards to deny midfielder Matty Oswin at full length. Town began to control the game somewhat from this point and Brigg were grateful to hear the half-time whistle.

Wire came out quickly, looking for a second goal to surely kill off the game, with winger Anthony Daniels going close twice for The Wire in quick succession. But there was no respite. Steer was called into action again in the second half to deny Lamb and rigg came closest to equalising on 56 minutes, when Bassanini missed a cross only for captain Tom Spearitt and Andy Thomas to combine to clear the ball off the line. Bassanini made up for his earlier error, smartly tipping Days effort over the bar. Town sewed the game up on 77 minutes when Lamb got onto the end of a long Bassanini clearance to beat Steer into the corner. Steer was called into action twice more, producing good saves from Rendall and Lamb.
