Spalding 1, Cammell Laird 2

IT was a weekend away for UniBond Division One South play- off certainties Cammell Laird and their supporters.

A postponement in January threw up the double header of Spalding United away on Saturday and Leicestershire outfit Quorn FC on the Sunday.

Needing just seven points to guarantee promotion to the UniBond Premier, Lairds ground out a plucky win against basement club Spalding but surprisingly, it wasn’t until the second half that Mark Reed put the Birkenhead men ahead – only for the Tulips to level on the hour. The points were wrapped up just before the final whistle when Eddie Jebb thundered home.

Lairds made the short hop across to Leicestershire yesterday for the second part of their weekend schedule against Quorn FC.

The hosts were predictably in the ascendancy in the first half but Lairds found their confidence and legs to keep Quorn at bay.

Although Quorn did take the lead on the half-hour mark through Justin Jenkins, Lairds were undaunted and levelled through Ian Cooke just before the break.

The vociferous travelling support kept the Birkenhead side’s momentum going and Reed scored what proved to be the winner 10 minutes into the second half.

The result leaves Lairds needing just four points to be mathematically sure of promotion to the UniBond Premier Division.
