Sheffield thwarted

WARRINGTON Town dented Sheffield’s UniBond League First Division playoff hopes as they scored a 2-1 victory at Cantilever Park.

Warrington Town were determined to upset the Yorkshire side, who played four games last week, with all the goals in the second half.

Sheffield started the brighter pressing Town back but the defence played their part. Thomas Lamb came close in the 23rd minute as his shot whistled past the post, but Sheffield were the stronger as the half ended.

The breakthrough came four minutes into the second half, Anthony Daniels with a shot that squeezed past Sheffield keeper Martin Kearney, Daniels should have got his second minutes later but he shot wide of the goal.

Sheffield pressed forward to try and get a goal, but Carl Rendell secured the points when a mistake in the Sheffield defence let him in to score on 67 minutes.

Asa Ingall pulled one back for the Sheffield outfit when he headed in from the corner and Diego Bassanini made a terrific save in injury time to deny Sheffield a point.

WARRINGTON: Bassanini, Smith (Fitzsimmons 82), Everitt, Spearitt, Thomas, Prescott, Daniles (Davies 75), Brown, Rendell, Lamb (Williams58).
