Aigburth spring a surprise on S. Liverpool

THE four cup semi-finals played on Sunday held shocks in both cups as the formbook went out of the window.

In the George Mahon Cup it’s hats off to Aigburth PH who reached the final of this Cup with a 2-1 win at South Liverpool, who must be disappointed at the result. Neil Wenham with his 17th of the campaign and Tony Caldwell sealed the final slot despite a goal from Kevin Martin, which gave South hope of at least extra time and penalties, but it was not to be. For APH this is a final in consecutive years as they reached and won the Roy Wade Cup last year.

In the other George Mahon Cup semi final Ford Motors beat Birchfield 1-0 in an enthralling game with the winner coming from Lee Thompson. So on Wednesday May 14 at Liverpool FA, it is APH v Ford Motors for the George Mahon Cup. Lets hope it’s a bit warmer!

In the Second Division Lord Wavertree Cup, shocks again as current leaders of the Division Essemmay OB were held to a 1-1 draw with Leyfield after 90 minutes and then the dreaded penalties which Leyfield won 5-4 to again cause an upset to the form book. Mick Crowley scoring in normal time for Essemmay OB and James Brown for Leyfield.

In the other semi final, Old Holts were too strong for Eli Lilly winning 3-0 with goals coming from Danny Murphy his 13th of the season, Steve Whiteside and Paul Joplin. So on Wednesday 30th April at Litherland Sports Park. Old Holts will entertain Leyfield to contest the Lord Wavertree Cup.

In League matters, the First Division is turning out to be the most competitive league for many a year at top and bottom. At the top its all change again as Page Celtic made easy work of Junior Cup finalist Stoneycroft to win 5-1 and resume the summit of the Division, Kevin Hodgeson with a double and now 10 goals, Tony Sullivan with his 11 goal, Robert Dillon and own goal were enough to leapfrog Page Celtic back to the top with 50 points.

Cheshire Lines stay third after a 3-1 win at home to Albany Athletic, John Hagadorn with a brace to take his total to 25 goals and top scorer to date and a single from Steve McLinden, whilst Mike Kinney scored for Albany. Cheshire Lines are on 47 points but have 2 games on Page Celtic.

REMYCA United must still harbour the chance to be promoted and again strengthen their chances with a 3-1 home win over Mackets Grenadier, Paul Smith adding to his total which now stands at 22 goals. Phil Ice for Mackets.

At the bottom it’s just as interesting as Northern Telecoms got a second wind an beat Alder FC 3-1 to push North Sefton back into the relegation spot. Mark Stanley, Ste Holloway and John Evans all scoring what could be vital goals come the end of the season. Timmy Naylor scores his 18th of the season for Alder. Finally Warbreck may have sealed the fate of Angus Village winning 5-0., with games running out Angus are 5 points adrift of the safety zone. Warbreck scorers included veteran John King…well done old man!.

In Division Two, Sacre Coeur took advantage of the Essemmay Cup action to trance Lydiate Weld 10-0….yes you read it right!…the Carraghers brothers amongst the goals (John and Mike who has 15 goals for the season) for Sacre, who go top on goal difference.

Bankfield are right behind them after a 6-0 thrashing of Redgate Rovers, Darren Pedden with a brace and Jordan Shirley adding to his total which is now 13 goals.

Lucas Sports and St Aloysius shared the spoils at Flinders St, whilst NELTC kept 5th spot after a 4-2 win at Roma, David O’Leary on the target again for NELTC.

South Sefton borough made almost certain that will be in the Premier League next season after a narrow but vital 2-1 win over fellow strugglers Collegiate OB, Graham Hughes and Kevin derby grabbing all the points for South Sefton.
