Fixture run-in catches up with Bootle

BOOTLE’S strenuous end of season run in of fixtures has certainly caught up with them as the New Bucks Park side slid to their fifth defeat in their last six games – which have been crammed into the past 13 days.

After suffering two cup final defeats in the past week, the Blues were never at the races after Dwayne Spence notched the first of his two goals for Eccleshall after 22 minutes.

Peter Bromley doubled the tally from the penalty spot after Paul Hopkins had equalised for the visitors.

Spence once again found the target to earn his side the points and avoid the prospect of having to apply for re-election.

There was better news for Bootle Reserves, who registered a 1-0 home success over rivals Glossop North End Reserves in their quest for the Reserve Division title.

The victors lead the table by one point and have three games to play while their Derbyshire counterparts have only two outstanding fixtures.

Another team to leapfrog their opponents were Ashton Athletic, who snatched third spot in the Second Division table after defeating Oldham Town 3-2.

Richard Sharpe fired Athletic into a third-minute lead before Tom Matley drew the sides level on 30 minutes. Just before the break, Paul McVeigh restored the Brocstedes Park side’s advantage. Elstron Die once again brought the teams level two minutes from time and while Town were celebrating, Simon Gallenders forced his way through to snatch an injury-time winner and grab the coveted third spot.
