FRUSTRATED Burscough manager Joe Dunn was left cursing a lack of firepower after his side’s Blue Square North defeat at the Impact Arena.
His comments were clearly aimed at a shot-shy forward line when he declared: “We need to be more ruthless in front of goal.”
His point was that Burscough had at least as much of the play in the second-half as Alfreton, but still looked the least likely to score as they chased the game after the hosts had dominated the latter period of the first half. Burscough had actually started well and might well have taken the lead. The home defence were clearly having problems coping with the unorthodox style of Burscough striker Chris Amadi, while the midfield were eager to get forward in support.
In the opening stages Eddie Stanford blazed a shot over the home bar from 15 yards as Burscough squandered further openings before Alfreton took the lead in the 22nd minute.
Former Matlock Town player Kris Bowler proved elusive to Burscough for the whole 90 minutes and his goal only served to emphasise the point. After being allowed space to turn in the centre-circle Bowler started and finished a flowing move.
They went further ahead on 37 minutes when Leo Fortune-West pounced on a rebound.
