THE testimonial game for Tranmere goalkeeper John Achterberg has been set for Monday, March 30, with a dinner and a golf day also planned.
The main event could become the largest reunion of former Rovers players ever seen at Prenton Park as just about every player who pulled on a white shirt during the Dutchman’s 11 seasons at Prenton Park wants to be involved.
It should also provide a night rich in nostalgia and entertainment for supporters as the squad from the 2000 Worthington Cup final takes on a Tranmere Past team.
Achterberg’s 306 first-team games for Tranmere span the period from September 1998 to the present. He ran up a hefty phone bill getting in touch with his former teammates.
He said: “I think I reached basically every player I’ve been involved with here and they all said they want to come. The only one we could not trace was Steve Yates, who I think is living abroad.
“There are about 50 players who want to come. Some players are still involved with clubs and they will need permission, so we can’t count on them all being here on the night.”
Achterberg’s popularity among supporters is equally strong.
He added: “We are looking for sponsors for the game, sponsors for the different suites at Prenton Park and to make arrangements for both the dinner and the golf day.”
