Injuries fail to halt Liverpool from making trophy progress

INJURY-HIT AFC Liverpool made progress in the Vodkat League First Division Trophy with a comfortable 4-1 win at Eccleshall.

The switching of the tie to the Potteries Club, due to a ground clash, did not affect the Reds, who were always in command following a brace from new signing Ndiwa Kangana and further strikes from Andy Olsen and Andy McCoy. They now face a second round trip to Rochdale Town. Bootle failed to find the net for only the second time this season and lost their unbeaten tag by going down 3-0 at Stone Dominoes.

Both Ashton clubs also failed to hit the target with Athletic losing 1-0 at home to New Mills while Town were hit for six at in-form Oldham Town. No such problems for Runcorn Linnets, who raced into a four-goal lead at Bacup Borough through Michael Morrison, Ged Courtney, Nick Young and Robin Moore. Borough replied with two late goals. Formby picked up their first point in four outings after Carl Gornell gave his side the lead at bottom of the table Abbey Hey, who equalised on the stroke of half-time through Carl Maylett to share the spoils. Winsford United also had to settle for a point after twice coming from behind in their 2-2 clash with Atherton LR, Ian Callaghan and Ross Kennedy being the Barton Stadium marksmen.

A tight game at Knowsley Road saw a spirited St Helens Town go down 3-0 to League leaders AFC Fylde.
