Tranmere start to believe in their promotion hopes

MANAGER Ronnie Moore put promotion on the agenda after Tranmere moved to the edge of the League One play-off zone over the weekend.

Rovers gained a toehold in the top six following a 2-0 home win over Crewe Alexandra on Friday night.

And although they slipped back to eighth place after the weekend programme was completed, they are in a group of clubs on 22 points straddling fifth to eighth places.

They have another opportunity to climb the table at Stockport County tomorrow.

Moore said: “Making the play-offs would be brilliant and it’s about being consistent and hard to beat, because I don’t think there is much difference between most of the teams at this level.”

Tranmere reeled off a third win and a third clean sheet in seven days at the expense of bottom of the table Crewe, thanks to second half goals by Steve Jennings and Chris Shuker.

They have taken 12 points from the last 15 at stake. After turning around a worrying losing streak at Prenton Park with back-to-back home wins last week, Rovers now face successive away games at Stockport and MK Dons, two sides showing similar ambitions.

Moore said: “Stockport will be a difficult game.

“They are young side with great legs and energy. But if we keep playing well, we should not worry about anyone.

“We have an extra day’s rest on Stockport, who played on Saturday, and we will see if that benefits us on Tuesday night.”

Moore argues Tranmere’s position in the table could have been even stronger.

He said: “We are just a little bit sick that we could not scrape something from the three games we lost at home.

“There was only one of them – against Millwall – in which we were poor. I think we were unlucky in the other two.”

The victories over Cheltenham and Crewe followed a similar pattern, with Tranmere taking control of the game with second half goals.

Moore said: “The second half performances were very good and the important thing is we are not conceding goals.

“We are looking solid. I would like to see us come out of the blocks a little quicker but Crewe did not have many chances in the game on Friday night.

“Danny Coyne had to make a good save early on but that’s all he had to do.”

Jennings finally broke his scoring duck for the season with Tranmere’s opening strike on Friday night.

The midfielder had said he would “run a marathon” for a goal but was left with nothing more than a tap-in after being set up by Shuker.

The in-form winger, showing every sign that the injury troubles of last year are behind him, then completed the scoring by capitalising on a mistake by Crewe centre-back Dennis Lawrence, who allowed a clearance from Ian Goodison to bounce over his head on the halfway line.

Moore said: “To run from the halfway line and put the chance away was a terrific finish.

“Three weeks ago Shukes would not have score that goal. The defender would have caught up with him.

“He is getting back his fitness and sharpness now.”

Meanwhile, Tranmere face an away tie at Accrington Stanley in the first round of the FA Cup. Rovers have close links with the League Two club where young striker Terry Gornell is currently on loan.

The clubs met in the Johnstones Paint Trophy in September, with Tranmere winning the first round tie at Prenton Park thanks to a goal by Ed Sonko.

The first round FA Cup games are to be staged over the weekend of Saturday, November 8.
