MARINE succumbed to lower level opposition for the second consecutive year as they crashed out of the FA Trophy.
This season it was the turn of UniBond Premier Division side Durham City to prosper where Bamber Bridge had done previously and inflict a painful defeat on Marine.
The first half was a tight affair but nonetheless a good spectacle as both sides competed equally, showing flashes of neat football.
Unfortunately for Marine they failed to carry that momentum into the second period as Durham took advantage of some over generous defending to take a 48th minute lead through Adam Johnson.
City doubled their lead on 62 minutes through Gavin Cogdon before Marine’s Peter Cumiskey unleashed a bullet of a shot to reduce the lead and set up a thrilling finale.
But ultimately Marine left it too late to salvage a draw and it was Durham who progressed.
It was a first defeat in eight games for Alvin McDonald’s men as Durham held firm in the face of a late home barrage to book their place in the third qualifying round.
