Peter Davenport 200
AFTER more than a decade in football management, former Southport manager Peter Davenport recently added a new coaching qualification to his CV – as a coarse angling instructor.
And the 47-year old Merseysider is looking forward to the challenge of introducing youngsters to the country’s largest participation sport with as much enthusiasm as he ever brought to the game that has dominated his life.
The former centre-forward said: “I took up angling more than 10 years ago and it’s something I have really enjoyed. Once I had the opportunity to spend more time at it I decided I wanted to learn how to do it properly.
“Now I’ve just been awarded a preliminary coaching certificate, which means I can pass on that knowledge to others, particularly youngsters and I’ve been so involved recently that I haven’t really been following what’s been happening in football.”
Davenport, who finished as Manchester United’s top scorer in his first full season with them 22 years ago, revealed that he had always been a fan of the Old Trafford club.
“At school in Birkenhead, half the class were Liverpool fans and the rest were Evertonians,” he said. “So you can imagine the stick I got, especially during the 1970s which were not a good time for United and they were relegated.”
Davenport will be back in action on Sunday (2pm) for a Manchester United Legends XI against their Liverpool counterparts at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground.
The match is a fund-raiser for Wrexham FC’s Centre of Excellence.
Among those lining up in a United shirt alongside Davenport at the Racecourse will be David May, Sammy McIlroy, Clayton Blackmore, Deiniol Graham and Arthur Albiston, while the Liverpool side will feature Dean Saunders, John Aldridge, Alan Kenndey, Phil Neal, Jason McAteer and Jan Molby.
Tickets are on sale at Wrexham FC, at www.ticketmaster.co.uk or by calling 0844 847 2500.
