Hucknall upset the odds at Vauxhalls

IF THERE was ever a match which personified the phrase ‘a game of two halves’ this was it as bottom club Hucknall recorded only their second Blue Square North league win of the season.

Hucknall started strongest and broke the deadlock in just the seventh minute. Niall O’Brien’s shot was initially cleared off the line but the rebound fell back at his feet and he made no mistake second time round.

Hucknall then scored two goals in quick succession. First it was Danny Bacon on 29 minutes who rifled the ball home from 12 yards out. A minute later a Jay Smedley cross was headed home by Chris Shaw.

On 37 minutes, the Motormen were thrown a lifeline as the linesman spotted a handball in the penalty area. However captain Mattie Burke saw his spot-kick saved.

After the interval, the arrival of super sub Anthony Wright seemed to lift Vauxhalls. On 59 minutes Burke rattled the crossbar from 25 yards and Wright was unlucky to see his shot go over from the rebound.

But on 72 minutes Wright made it 3-1. Lee Dames whipped in a great cross from the left and Wright headed home from four yards.

Three minutes later it was 3-2. Wright went to shoot just in the area but was hauled down from behind and converted the penalty himself. Tom Field then hit the post from a free-kick.
