TRANMERE secured a place in their third round of the FA Youth Cup with a 2 - 0 hard-working but uninspired victory against Solihull in the West Midlands last night.
It was only in the final phase of the contest that the visitors turned pressure into chances and goals, thanks to two strikes from front man Josh Macauley.
Tranmere made the breakthrough on 71 minutes when Dave Wilson’s cross was headed home by Macauley. A quarter of an hour later Macauley settled the issue, finishing off a curling cross from Luis Corrigan after good pressurising work from the forwards.
Coach Shaun Garnett said: “We can play better and the boys know it, but we got the job done and that is the most important thing.
“The boys will learn from getting through games like that but they know they’ll have to improve on the performance if we are going to progress further in the competition.”
Tranmere travel to Northampton Town in round three, at a date yet to be fixed.
