Maghull’s four-goal salvo stuns the leaders

RUNCORN Town had the ideal opportunity to increase their lead at the top of the first division with their rivals engaged in the Umbro Cheshire Cup, but a determined Maghull side made them work hard for a single point.
Even two braces from Jason Carey and Simon Burton wasn’t enough as Maghull came back through Simon Donaghue, Marvin Molyneux, Baquar Parvas and Jay Miller.
Bottom club Halton salvaged a point against Vauxhall Motors Reserves with Adam Horrocks finding the net. Motors replied through David Lynch. A Peter Tobin strike for Aintree Villa saw off Heswall. Second-placed West Kirby reached the quarter finals of the Umbro Cup by edging out Newton. Kirby opened the scoring after 10 minutes when Newton’s keeper could only tip a shot onto the bar which rebounded kindly for Carl Maughan to slot home.
Daniel Grannon headed home through a crowed penalty area to make it 2-0. Newton fought back with a neatly headed goal by Steve Jones on 35 minutes, but Kirby went further ahead in the 53rd minute after Kevin Ryan outpaced the defence to cross for the unmarked Maughan to net his second. Newton set up an interesting last five minutes after Jones netted his second.
Second division Ashville caused a surprise, netting three times through an Adam Johnson double and Craig Smith to send Christleton out. Jamie Kenyon and Chris Barrow helped Cammell Laird Reserves to oust Mallaby (Steve Abbott).
In the second division Mossley Hill Athletic moved into third with a 2-0 victory over New Brighton, Ben Carson and Steve Owens scoring. Two from Nicky Dillon gave Poulton Vics Reserves a three-point cushion at the top while leaving Heswall Reserves firmly anchored to the foot of the table.
Marshalls came back to form in the third division with a six-goal win over bottom side Blacon YC Reserves, Richard Jones (2), Phil Davies, Gary Powell, David Powell and a David Sabri penalty compiling the tally.
South Liverpool’s Connor O’Shea saw off AFC Bebington with a hat-trick.
