Scunthorpe given a licence to thrill

MANAGER Nigel Adkins insists Scunthorpe won’t dilute their positive approach at Prenton Park tonight after losing the League One leadership in a 2-1 home defeat to Leicester City last weekend.

The Iron knocked in nine more goals than Tranmere over the first 17 games of the campaign and bring an impressive record of five wins out of eight away games so far to the Wirral.

Adkins said: “The players have a licence to get forward and entertain. Some of the football we have played this season has been a joy to watch and we are not going to stop that.

“We want to play attractive football and to do that you have to take a few chances to get yourself forward. All right, we might make a mistake or two but as a team we do a heck of a lot of good things and we are improving all the time.”

Birkenhead-born Adkins had a brief playing career with Tranmere as a goalkeeper in the 1980s and retains an affection for his home-town club. He also rates the potential of Ronnie Moore’s team. Adkins said: “It will be a tough game for us because Tranmere will be very adventurous. They get the ball forward and have big Bas Savage up top.

“I hope it will be an open game because it’s a big pitch there.”
