Port’s travel slickness brought to an end by Brown

A CROWD of more than 3,500 saw Southport lose their unbeaten away record at AFC Telford in this tense Blue Square North fixture.

The full-time Shropshire outfit outlined their title credentials with a classy performance which always left Liam Watson’s side in the shadows.

Southport, top of the league at kick-off, started brightly, with Mark Duffy keen to prove his ability to the Football League scouts in attendance.

The 22-year-old winger nearly silenced the boisterous home support with a dipping half-volley that whistled wide before cutting in from the left and blasting a shot straight at Young.

Telford’s Lee Vaughan twice had chances to put the hosts ahead but sliced his shot on both occasions after surging into the box from defence.

After the interval – which bizarrely featured an appearance from former World Snooker champion Shaun Murphy – the Bucks found their rhythm and Port were left on the back foot.

Andy Brown looked set to open the scoring when he found himself free at the back post, only to be denied by an outstanding last-ditch tackle from McGinn.

But Brown was not finished and netted the decisive match winner after connecting with Moore’s inviting cross to head past McMillan from 10 yards.

Southport had a glorious chance to equalise minutes later with their only real chance of the half. Neil Robinson was culpable of blazing over the bar from two yards out after Young had parried Lee’s header.
