Four-star Southport shock Premier club Altrincham

SOUTHPORT romped to FA Trophy victory on Saturday as they ruthlessly dumped Blue Square Premier side Altrincham out of the competition.

Striker Steve Daly started and finished a second half scoring spree that included three goals inside 11 minutes, blowing their opponents away.

Daly was the hero in midweek as the Sandgrounders overcame Wrexham in the Setanta Shield and repeated the trick on Saturday as he led Southport to another impressive victory, sliding the first goal under Stuart Coburn on 66 minutes after being played in by a pass from Ciaran Kilheeney.

Five minutes later Ashley Winn picked out Mark Duffy at the back post to nod in the second before Kilheeney struck home a 77th-minute penalty after Daly was fouled.

Altrincham were shell shocked by Port’s quick fire treble but mustered a response with four minutes remaining when Chris Senior ran clear to prod past Tony McMillan. It would, however, prove to give the home support false hope as a counter attack resulted in Michael Barnes crossing for Daly to tap in the fourth goal.
