TRANMERE will seek to add to the relegation worries of Brighton manager Micky Adams when he arrives at Prenton Park on Saturday.
The Seagulls went through to the southern final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy by winning a penalty shoot-out at Shrewsbury on Tuesday night while Rovers went out of the same competition to a heartbreaking last-minute own goal at Scunthorpe.
But it is League One form that is most worrying for Adams, whose side are without a win in the last five games and just one point and one place above the drop zone.
Adams, in his second spell as Brighton’s manager, admits he is “under a bit of pressure” from supporters and was targeted for abuse after a 4-2 home defeat to MK Dons last weekend.
Adams said: “Managers are always vulnerable when the stats are there, staring them in the face.”
But the former Leicester manager believes he has the support of Brighton coach Dick Knight and the board – for now.
He has pleaded for patience and reminds supporters he was not an overnight success in his ultimately successful first spell in charge of the club.
Adams said: “The one thing managers don’t get is time and maybe, because of what I did here last time, I have possibly been given a stay of execution.
“I’d like people to remember the legacy that put Albion in good stead. I put together a squad of players and a team but I was given time to do that, thankfully, by a good board and a good chairman.
“That board and the chairman are still there. If I have lost some of the fans – and I can understand I might have done – I know I have not lost the directors and the chairman yet but all managers are judged on performances and results and what they are bringing to the football club.
“Hopefully I’ll leave another legacy at this club. At the moment I am not doing the job that I was brought in for and, whilst I’m not doing that, you always feel a little bit pressure but it will make us stronger.”
He added: “What I want the fans to focus on, and what I have said to the players, is there is no white charger coming over the hills. We can’t do anything until January, so the players have got to stick together and they need the fans with them.
“Stick with them and encourage them as much as you can and let’s all try and get through this period. I don’t think it’s a time to panic and I’m certainly not panicking. The boys are giving me everything they possibly can.
“At least we know what we have got to do and how to improve it. Given time I am confident I’m the man to turn it around.”
Albion’s JPT progress through to the area final against Luton over two legs came at a price. Colin Hawkins (calf), Adam Hinshelwood (dead leg) and Kevin McLeod (knee), have joined absent top scorer Glen Murray (ankle) on an ever-lengthening casualty list ahead of the Tranmere game.
ROVERS are offering several special deals to supporters over December and January.
A VAT discount is available to supporters in January if they attend the home game against Brighton on Saturday.
The club will be issuing discount vouchers to fans buying advance tickets or paying cash at the turnstiles. Adults will receive a £5 voucher, seniors and young persons a £3 voucher and juniors a £1.50 voucher.
Supporters can then use the vouchers against the purchase of a home League One match ticket in January 2009, covering matches against Peterborough United, Carlisle United or Stockport County. The voucher can be either presented at the ticket office before kick-off to obtain a discounted match ticket or at the turnstiles for discounted entry to one of the games.
Tranmere are offering workers at Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port plant half-price admission for the Brighton game.
To gain their special half-price ticket, Vauxhall’s employees should present their identity card at the ticket office ahead of the game.
Rovers are also offering existing season ticket holders the opportunity to bring a friend or family member for half-price for the Walsall game on Sunday, December 28.
Season ticket holders wishing to take advantage of the offer should present Voucher L from their season ticket books to the ticket office/club shop prior to the game in exchange for a half-price ticket. The half-price ticket must be for the same stand as the season ticket. Junior, senior and young persons season ticket holders can purchase half-price adult tickets.
